Unique Freedoms on College Campuses

Happy (belated) 4th of July! As we celebrated our country’s independence last week, we thought it would be fun to honor “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness”-- college-style, of course! So today we’re sharing some unique freedoms on college campuses, from self-scheduled final exams to make-your-own-majors to tuition-free schools. 

HONOR CODES

An honor code is a set of standards and values that a school outlines for its students regarding academic integrity, ethical conduct, and behavior. Although it might just sound like a fancy label for another set of rules and restrictions, honor codes can actually offer students a surprising number of freedoms. 

At Davidson College, for example, students have the flexibility to self-schedule their final exams–and no, the professors don’t watch them take the test. Randolph-Macon College takes a similar approach to final exams, allowing undergrads to choose the time, day, and even room to complete their tests. And as part of their honor code, students have another unique liberty: freedom from “telling on” someone else. Instead of reporting an honor code violation, students are encouraged to ask the person to report themselves. 

But with great honor code freedom comes great responsibility. Haverford College has one of the few student-run honor codes, which is overseen by its Honor Council. This group of 16 students works to resolve honor code violations and maintains the spirit and integrity of the code. It’s a big job, but the Honor Council gives students the freedom to shape the campus culture and address problems fairly.

Design your own major 

Forget having to pick from a list of approved majors! Some schools give students the freedom to design their own course of study. In Indiana University’s Individualized Major Program (IMP), undergraduates work with a faculty sponsor to design a multidisciplinary major and a personalized curriculum. IMP students can’t escape the university’s general education requirements, though!  

Similarly, James Madison University’s Independent Scholars Program seeks students whose interests break the typical curricular boundaries. Participants develop an area of inquiry and plan a course of study which is grounded in experiential learning. Independent research or a creative project is a must! 

New York University is so committed to freedom of study that it dedicated an entire school to personalized majors. Gallatin School of Individualized Study emphasizes self-direction for mature students who want to build their own majors. The school also takes into account that designing a unique course of study can be challenging–and sometimes lonely. Therefore, Gallatin students are assigned two advisors. One acts as an “intellectual mentor” while the other oversees a small cohort of students and takes charge of community-building.

Grades

It’s not an urban myth! There actually are colleges and universities that don’t assign grades–well, at least not in the traditional way. Rather than relying on simple letters to measure student performance, professors at Sarah Lawrence College take a three-step approach to assessing undergrads. Critical ability assessments and narrative evaluations give faculty more freedom and flexibility to explain a student’s overall progress and performance. Plus, students are free from having to guess why they got that B+ instead of an A-. The thorough assessments and evaluations explain everything that the letter grade can’t.

While Sarah Lawrence students still see letter grades on their transcripts, that’s not the case at Brown University. Students here can choose to earn a letter grade for a particular class or a satisfactory/no credit designation. It’s up to the individual at the time of course registration, and if they change their minds later, they have the first month of the semester to switch their grading option. So with the freedom to choose letter grades or not, how does Brown calculate GPAs? Simple, they don’t! 

Students at Bennington College can also opt for letter grades, BUT only if they specifically request them during the semester. Otherwise, transcripts are composed solely of narrative evaluations, which are meant to foster a culture of conversation between students and faculty. 

Tuition

Let’s face it. High tuition costs and decades of loan repayments can be a huge burden for students. However, there are some colleges that have managed to free students of any financial worry. They have found creative ways for students to exchange tuition payments for good old-fashioned hard work. 

College of the Ozarks covers tuition costs, provided that students demonstrate need and agree to work on campus. Students at Warren Wilson College also work in exchange for tuition, with emphasis on learning a craft and gaining valuable skill sets for the professional world.

At Deep Springs College, located on a cattle ranch in California, all accepted students receive a full scholarship, including room and board. In return, undergrads are expected to work on the cattle ranch and contribute to the life of the school. The student body even helps make important decisions about admissions and faculty hires.

Thanks to a reimagining of the traditional semester calendar, some schools are able to offer undergraduates more freedom and flexibility in their schedules.

At Bates College, undergraduates spend the month of May taking a short course. These are immersive classes that take students off campus and into the field. Last spring, undergrads were analyzing earthquakes in California, studying theater in central Europe, and researching healthcare systems in South America. 

Undergrads at Colby College have the freedom to make dreary January much more exciting thanks to Jan Plan. This month-long block allows students to choose from an array of internships, research opportunities, and unconventional classes. For example, this past January, students had the option to earn their EMT licenses, learn the art of blacksmithing, study tropical plants in Costa Rica, and more! 

And finally, one of the most famous schools for scheduling freedom is Dartmouth College. Their D-Plan allows students to design their very own academic calendars. How exactly does that work? Well, the college distinguishes between residency terms, those where students study on campus, and leave terms, in which students intern or undertake research projects. Of course there are some guidelines to help students organize their calendars, but the D-Plan ultimately opens up a lot of possibilities that wouldn’t be available within a traditional semester schedule.

BIGGEST COLLEGE-RELATED NEWS OF THE WEEK

COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES AWAIT AFFIRMATIVE ACTION DECISION

The Supreme Court could issue a ruling on whether schools can continue to consider race in college admissions as soon as tomorrow, and colleges and universities are preparing. While no school has yet released a concrete plan for how they might respond if affirmative action is abolished, we suspect that this will impact whether or not schools remain test optional, as well as whether those that consider legacy as part of admissions will continue to do so. 

DESANTIS CHALLENGES COLLEGE ACCREDITATION

Last week, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ administration sued the U.S. Department of Education, claiming that it was disrupting the efforts of Florida public universities to switch accreditors. DeSantis says that accreditation boards have too much power over Florida schools, and are undermining decisions made by his administration. Florida’s current accreditor is the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACS), but more than half of Florida public schools are expected to change accreditors in the next two years. 

DUKE UNIVERSITY OFFERS FREE TUITION

If you are a Carolina resident, you might be in luck - Duke University is offering free tuition to students from North and South Carolina whose families make less than $150,000 per year. Duke is already need blind and meets 100% of students’ demonstrated need, but the full tuition grant is designed to encourage more applicants from the Carolinas, who can apply with the knowledge that if admitted, they will be able to attend without financial hardship. 

FLORIDA GATORS SCORE MOST RUNS IN COLLEGE WORLD SERIES HISTORY, BUT STILL LOSE

During a 24-4 game against LSU on Sunday, Florida scored 24 runs - breaking the previous record of 23 runs, scored by Notre Dame in 1957 and by Arizona State in 1984. But don’t feel too bad for LSU - they had a comeback on Monday evening and won the College World Series!

BEST ARTICLES OF THE WEEK

Last week, we shared an Atlantic opinion piece from a Princeton professor who believes that universities should not take political stances. This week, the opinion comes from a Princeton student - a rising senior who argues that when university departments take a political stance, it alienates some of their students. In the coming months, Princeton’s faculty will vote on a proposal that would prevent departments from taking positions on controversial issues. The student offers examples of the kind of official communications, from condemnation of the Kyle Rittenhouse verdict to the support of Roe v. Wade, that would be limited under the new proposal. 

The recurring question - is college worth it? - has a new answer. According to an analysis from the Institution for Higher Education Policy released last week, college is worth it for 93% of students. The report is meant to identify colleges that provide a “minimum economic return” for their students. In other words, college is “worth it” if students earn at least as much as a high school graduate, plus recoup their investment in college tuition, within 10 years after graduation. Public universities provide the best economic return, likely due to lower tuition costs, while for-profit colleges and private colleges are least likely to help students reach the threshold.

OFFICE HAPPENINGS

I (Colleen) was featured last week in U.S. News’ list of 18 Ways to Prepare for Your Freshman Year of College, sharing some of my top tips. If you are a Class of 2023 student, I highly recommend using at least a few hours of your summer to refresh yourself on topics from your high school courses, especially courses like math and foreign language that build on themselves year to year. This is also a great time to take a look at the list of clubs and organizations on your campus, so you can make a plan to get involved - without getting totally overwhelmed at the club fair! 

Shannon, Staci, and Ian led our second research session for clients last week. Performing college research is an essential skill for students as they think about writing “Why This School?” essays this summer. Wondering how the research session came to be? We noticed that our students have so much trouble with these types of essays and wanted to give them a little bit of extra help. After brainstorming ideas, we decided to offer all rising seniors two different opportunities to join a special session on research at no additional charge.

We covered: 

  • Parsing the prompt to really understand what the school is asking you to write about in your essay

  • Identifying aspects of the school that are unique and relevant to your interests - and which attributes aren't unique at all!

  • Using the ASC Method for performing research focused on academics, student life, and community

  • Choosing where to get started with your research and how to fact-check when you are done

Current clients who weren’t able to attend a session can, of course, work on these skills one on one during regular essay coaching meetings with their coaches! Our schedules are now posted throughout the summer, and we encourage our current clients to book meetings ASAP to ensure they get their preferred times to complete their essay work this summer.

Best of LGBTQIA+ Colleges

This year we are celebrating Pride Month by recognizing some of the most LGBTQIA+ friendly campuses in the country! These picks are based on our own impressions as well as data from the Campus Pride Index - a resource that measures a number of factors to compile a list of campuses to help LGBTQIA+ students and families find their best fit! Take a look at some of these schools this Pride Month: 

BEST IN VIRGINIA - Virginia Wesleyan University

Okay, so it may not have as much of a household name as some of the other Virginia schools, but Virginia Wesleyan is a great hidden gem! It ranks #5 on the Campus Pride Index (the highest ranking), and offers an Office of Gender and Sexuality Equity; Safe Space and Unconscious Bias workshops for faculty, staff, and students; and gender-neutral restrooms. In 2021, the university was recognized as an Equity & Inclusion College of Distinction. VWU’s Preferred Name and Pronoun form is shared with all faculty before the start of the semester, so students can ensure that professors know their preferred method of identification before they step into the classroom.  

BEST IN MARYLAND - University of Maryland

UMD offers a multitude of unique opportunities for LGBTQIA+ students. Any student can access the resources of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, & Transgender Equity Center, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg! The Lavender Leadership Honor Society is believed to be the first of its kind in the world, recognizing students, faculty, staff, and alumni involved in LGBTQIA+ social justice leadership. The Rainbow Terrapin Network organizes members of the school community to advocate for LGBTQIA+ social justice on campus, particularly in its newest initiative, the #TransTerps Project. 

In fact, not only did UMD receive the honor of being named the most LGBTQ+ friendly college in Maryland, it is ranked #1 in the nation by Campus Pride!

BEST IN DC - American University

The American University Center for Diversity and Inclusion spearheads a number of campus initiatives. In addition to producing an LGBTQIA+ newsletter, the office also offers a Trans Resource Guide and dedicated contact to help students navigate university policies. The university also has an all-gender housing option and the popular AU Pride student organization. Students can find support in a variety of ways at AU - everything from a dedicated AU LGBTQIA+ Facebook group to specialized health equity resources. 

BEST LIVING-LEARNING COMMUNITY - Dartmouth College

Dartmouth College’s Triangle House is open to all students, regardless of their sexual identification or gender identity. Residents have discussion groups focused on LGBTQIA+ issues, and can choose from multiple other options for engagement, from taking courses that focus on LGBTQIA+ topics to conducting an independent project with the Triangle House Live-In Advisor. Students are also encouraged to work together on social justice organizing, service, activism, and/or social change. In addition to the Live-In Advisor, students have the support of a Staff Advisor and peer mentor. 

BEST HBCU - Howard University

Another DC school on the list, Howard has the honor of being Campus Pride’s most highly-rated HBCU. Howard staff and faculty receive Safe Zone training on campus, and students can join organizations like the Coalition of Activist Students Celebrating the Acceptance of Diversity and Equality (CASCADE). Additionally, the university provides gender-inclusive housing and specialized LGBTQIA+ organizations in academic disciplines ranging from science to law. 

BEST STUDENT-SELECTED - Mount Holyoke College

Mount Holyoke tops the Princeton Review’s list of LGBTQ-Friendly colleges, based on student responses to the statement, “Students treat all persons equally, regardless of their sexual orientation and gender identity/expression.” This statement definitely describes Mount Holyoke!

This women’s college was the first of the Seven Sisters colleges to adopt a trans-inclusive admissions policy. LGBTQIA+ students can attend programs at the Jeannette Marks Cultural Center; live in the Mary Woolley Living-Learning Community with a focus on sexuality and gender identity; and join one of several LGBTQIA+ focused clubs. 

BEST FOR HEALTH EQUITY - University of Pennsylvania

All students can take advantage of Penn’s LGBT Center, which, in addition to providing advocacy and access to campus resources, also hosts a variety of events (most recently a pride month Pride & Popsicles pop up!). You can check out their active instagram @PennLGBT.

But it is the school’s medical system that stands out on this list. The Human Rights Campaign recently named Penn Medicine a “Leader in LGBT Healthcare Equality.” It offers LGBTQ treatment teams as well as a Transgender Patient Advocacy Program.

BEST PRIDE MONTH CELEBRATION - San Diego State University

If you are going to celebrate Pride Month at any college, make it San Diego State! The university’s Pride Center has an annual contingent in the San Diego Pride Parade, as well as an alumni mixer and happy hour. And for those who can’t make it to campus, the university will also host a virtual celebration. 

But it isn’t only during Pride that LGBTQIA+ students should consider San Diego State - its Pride House living-learning community, active Pride Center, and gender-inclusive housing make it #2 on Campus Pride’s list.

Your Passport to Understanding Study Abroad Programs

As we help students refine their preferences and develop their college lists, we often hear that the factors we suggest for consideration weren’t on students’ radar at all before we brought them up.

For example, how many sixteen-year-olds are thinking about the geography of campus recruiting at a given school? Yet this is important for students who plan to go directly into the workforce, because it can often determine where a student will have the ability to live after graduation.

On the flip side, there’s one particular factor that often begins as a top consideration in students’ college searches, and we have to move it down the list: study abroad!

Don’t get me wrong: we think study abroad is a fantastic opportunity and encourage our students to take advantage of it. But in most circumstances, it’s a mistake to use an individual school’s study abroad programs as a driving consideration for a college choice. After all, a “great study abroad program” doesn’t mean today what it did in generations past: the majority of the best study abroad programs now involve students from different colleges participating together!

FOUR CATEGORIES OF STUDY ABROAD PROGRAMS

Typically, study abroad programs - whether they take place during the academic year or summer - more or less fall into four different categories: 

1. Programs offered by schools for their own students only

2. Programs offered by schools for students from ANY school 

3. Affiliate programs offered by approved third party companies

4. Direct-enrollment programs at universities abroad

CHOOSING A STUDY ABROAD PROGRAM THAT’S RIGHT FOR YOU

With so many different options, how do you choose the program that’s right for you? Just like the college search itself, finding the right study abroad program will take a bit of soul searching. You’ll need to consider your social and cultural goals for your international experience. For example, do you want to spend a semester bonding and traveling with current friends? Would you rather meet an entirely new group of people? Are you hoping to immerse yourself in the culture and become part of a local community? Or do you see yourself traveling from city-to-city on weekends?

Studying abroad through your own college or university does make things logistically easier from a GPA and transcript standpoint. It's also a good way to meet new friends and broaden your social network within your university - you are becoming close with people that you'll be back on campus with when you return.

However, it can be fun to meet people from different schools, too - in programs where students from multiple colleges and universities participate together, you tend to see a wider diversity of participants. It can also be fun for high school friends who go to different colleges to reconnect and participate in a program together.

Participating in a direct enrollment program with a university abroad will offer the most authentic experience in terms of immersion into the local culture and making friends with local students instead of other Americans. And if you’re trying to improve your foreign language skills, a direct enrollment program often provides the fast-track to better proficiency (or even fluency!). 

EXPLORING YOUR OPTIONS

If you’re considering studying abroad, be sure to make an appointment with your school’s study abroad office. The staff can go over your options in detail and make suggestions based on your goals. Many schools also host study abroad fairs and information sessions each semester, so be on the lookout for these events. 

For students exploring affiliate program options, take a look at these popular organizations: CIEE, IES Abroad, and CIS Abroad. In addition to traditional semester programs, there are also plenty of options for undergraduates looking for a summer adventure, a winter break overseas, or even an international internship experience.

There are literally thousands of study abroad programs to choose from, and while we can’t possibly cover all of them, we do want to share some of our favorites.

Programs offered by schools for their own students only

Wake Forest University: Venice Campus

Wake students who dream of visiting Italy are in luck! Undergraduates can spend an entire semester (or summer) at Casa Artom - Wake’s Italian campus - living in an idyllic 19th century house right on the Grand Canal in Venice. Classes are offered in subjects such as economics, art history, and Italian (of course!) and are taught by Wake faculty, as well as some local professors. Che buono!

University of Georgia: Tropical Entomology and Evolutionary Biology in Ecuador and the Galápagos

Forget the beach! Students at UGA have the opportunity to spend the summer in the jungles of Ecuador. This “more-than-two-week” summer course - Tropical Entomology and Evolutionary Biology - provides students with the opportunity to study insects up close and personal in the most exotic natural locales of the country. As if that’s not cool enough, the program also includes a trip to the Galápagos Islands, where participants hike and snorkel, all while studying animals in their habitats.

Villanova University: Irish Studies in Galway

This Villanova study abroad program might just be a lucky charm for students looking for the best of all worlds: the chance to form a close-knit bond with other Wildcats and become immersed in a different culture. Participants spend the semester at the University of Galway, which is known for its diverse curriculum. There are courses for just about any major! The program houses its members in student apartments around campus and gives them access to all of the societies (aka clubs) and events that the university has to offer. 

Programs offered by schools for students from ANY school 

The University of Arizona: Security and Peacebuilding in Colombia

The University of Arizona has a truly hands-on approach to studying abroad. Instead of spending months in the classroom, students participating in their Security and Peacebuilding in Colombia program learn by doing. They observe the peace process in action, as they hear from guest speakers and engage with political and social leaders in the country. Plus, participants have the chance to complete an internship or service learning project to put their knowledge into practice. 

St. Lawrence University: Kenya Semester Program

The Kenya Semester program is one of the most established, longest-running U.S. study abroad programs. What has made it so successful is the program’s unique approach. Not only do students take traditional classes, they also become fully immersed in the culture through homestays, camping trips, and field studies. And at the end of the semester, students choose a facet of Kenyan society and complete a major independent research project.

Middlebury College: Museum Studies in Oxford

This is the ideal program for museum lovers, history buffs, or art aficionados! As part of the Museum Studies in Oxford program, students spend a month visiting heritage sites and famous museums in the UK; completing a practicum at an art gallery; and meeting with experts in the museum industry.

Affiliate programs offered by approved third party companies for students from ANY school 

Foundation for International Education: Peace and Conflict Studies in Ireland and the Middle East

The Foundation for International Education offers students a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Participants spend the summer analyzing peace and conflict efforts in Ireland and Jordan. But this isn’t your typical study abroad program: participants have the chance to work on case studies, meet with leaders, and even learn the Arabic language.

RWTH International Academy: Automotive Engineering and Future Mobility

Most students dread the idea of summer school, but what if your classes involved racing cars? That’s exactly what participants in the Automotive Engineering and Future Mobility program can do this summer! Students travel to Germany where they’ll get an insider look at the automotive industry. Participants debate current issues in automotive systems; collaborate on a number of case studies; and even network with experts. What a great way to rev your career in this advancing field! 

Seamester

One of the most unique ways to spend a semester studying abroad is to head out to sea. For over forty years, Seamester has offered incredible voyages across the globe for college students. The program offers undergrads the chance to spend months on a vessel, helping to navigate the adventure while also studying subjects such as oceanography, marine biology, and leadership. Seamester is the ultimate team-building experience and one that can take you to exotic places across the world, from Bali to Antigua to South Africa.

Direct-enrollment programs at universities abroad for students from ANY school 

The London School of Economics and Political Science: The General Course

Most students don’t study abroad at The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) for just a few months; they stay for an entire year! As part of the General Course program, students become fully integrated in the community, taking part in the academic and social life of the school. And the best part? When your study abroad program is complete, you become a permanent member of the LSE alumni network.

The Paris Institute of Political Studies: Exchange Programme

Bonjour! The Paris Institute of Political Studies- also known as SciencesPo- offers an exchange program for students who want to study abroad for a single semester or entire school year. Participants can register for classes in political science (obviously!), international relations, law, and economics. And there’s more! There’s also an opportunity to develop proficiency in the French language and study the history and culture of Europe. 

 Maastricht University: Exchange 

Maastricht is known for being the most international university in the Netherlands and welcomes students from around the world every year as part of their exchange program. Here, participants can study a range of academic subjects and take part in their problem-based learning curriculum. And when you’re not in class, there’s plenty to do in the small city of Maastricht. It has a lot of charm and is conveniently located in an ideal part of Europe. 

MOVING FORWARD

As you can see, most students come to realize that where they end up studying abroad has little to do with where they go to college. They choose to put this factor aside in the college search to focus on other considerations: like academic programs, campus life opportunities, or - let’s be honest - the food!

And a handful of students will determine that study abroad does remain an important factor in their search after all: maybe they have a niche major with a signature abroad program related to it, or maybe they feel strongly about wanting to use the experience to build relationships with students at their own university. As long as this preference is based on an accurate understanding of the study abroad landscape, that’s 100% okay with us!

Trend Watch: The Rise of Metaversities

This week Morehouse College made headlines when it announced its new Black History course, set to launch in Spring 2023. Why all of the hype, you might ask? Well, this isn’t a case of a controversial curriculum. It’s an innovative leap into the future of higher education. 

Students who enroll in “History of the African Diaspora Since 1800” will have the opportunity to attend the March on Washington with Martin Luther King, Jr. and visit soldiers on the civil war battlefields. That’s because the course takes place in the metaverse–an immersive online environment that defies all limits of time and space. With the aid of virtual reality headsets and avatars, students will transport themselves into key historical events, gaining a perspective like never before. 

This is just one of the courses Morehouse offers in the metaverse. There are currently nine others, spanning across several academic departments. And Morehouse isn’t the only college where undergraduates can strap on a headset and experience an entirely new kind of learning. Currently ten schools across the country are experimenting with metaverse courses, and many are predicting that such classes- and even “metaversitites”- will be the future of higher education.

Understanding the metaverse

Last year when Facebook rebranded itself as Meta, the term “metaverse” began popping up all over the internet. If you conduct a quick Google search, you’ll find that there is no standard definition of the term. In fact, most admit that we don’t know exactly what the metaverse entails just yet; there are still many unknown possibilities. But in simple terms, the metaverse is a network of 3D interactive environments where users can work, socialize, and yes, even go to school. 

The metaverse is still in early stages of experimentation, and colleges like Morehouse are acting as case studies for how the metaverse can enhance students’ educational experiences.

The birth of metaversities 

This past April, virtual reality specialists VictoryXR and EngageXR teamed up to create a virtual university pilot program for ten participating schools, including West Virginia University and University of Maryland Global Campus. These “metaversities” are digital campuses that replicate the exact look and feel of the physical school setting. With the aid of a headset, undergrads can do just about everything they’d do if they were right on campus: walk through the quad; engage in class discussions; work on group projects. But the technology also allows students to experience a type of learning that just wouldn’t be feasible IRL (in real life). For example, students dissecting a heart in a biology lab can shrink their avatars and walk through the ventricles. And those studying astronomy can get up close and personal with the stars.

Not only do metaverse courses eliminate the barriers of time and space; they can also address other educational challenges. The metaverse does away with the traditional classroom structure, creating a more exciting and personalized learning experience for students. Proponents of metaversities believe that such courses will increase student retention, especially for those who struggle in a typical classroom environment.  And for students with learning differences, the metaverse could be a real game-changer. 

Additionally, several have commented on the potential for metaverse classes to improve student engagement. Forget boring lectures! Classes in the metaverse rely on student-centered learning experiences where participants are constantly exploring, creating, and building. And because the metaverse takes students outside the constraints of geography and time, there are endless possibilities for constructing and connecting.

Of course, no new technology is without its critics. Logistical concerns are at the forefront of the metaversity debate. After all, the metaverse can get expensive! Schools not only have to purchase virtual reality headsets for all students, which can cost anywhere from $400-1,500 per pair, but they spend thousands in metaverse platform subscriptions each year. Plus, universities will have to expand their IT departments to maintain the technology and invest in extensive professor training.  Students themselves can accrue unexpected costs as well. Metaverse courses put a big strain on internet services, requiring some to ‘up’ their internet packages. And what about those who don’t have access to high-speed connections? Who knows? 

Furthermore, many are concerned about the psychological and social ramifications of virtual education. This is our biggest concern, too. Will students have difficulty distinguishing reality from fantasy? How will they develop healthy relationship-building habits and socialization skills? How will they .. have fun? And how will the metaverse prepare them to succeed in real life? What impact could this shift have upon future generations and the world as we know it? Only time will tell. 

Looking into the future

Given that metaversities are in their infancy, it is difficult to predict where these worlds will ultimately steer higher education. For now colleges experimenting with metaversities can continue collecting and assessing data. The numbers on course enrollments, student attendance, and assessments will hopefully start to tell us more about the risks and rewards and the world of possibilities for the future.

BIGGEST COLLEGE-RELATED NEWS OF THE WEEK

SUPPLEMENTAL ESSAY TOPICS RELEASED

A number of schools have begun to release supplemental essays for the 2022-2023 application cycle, including Virginia Tech, Villanova, University of Miami, University of Georgia and more. UGA also announced that they will be releasing their actual Common Application supplement on 8/1 in order to align with other schools' application release dates. This is welcome news, as UGA applicants in previous years have had to wait until September to complete the supplement!

MIT TOPS WORLD UNIVERSITY RANKINGS

The QS world university rankings came out this week, with MIT topping the list. This list includes universities from all over the world (see #2 - the University of Cambridge), but five of the top 10 were U.S. schools, and four were in the UK. The only outlier? Switzerland’s ETH Zurich. 

HISPANIC-SERVING RESEARCH INSTITUTION ALLIANCE

Twenty hispanic-serving research institutions across the U.S. announced a new alliance at their launch event in D.C. yesterday, pledging to increase the number of Hispanic faculty and doctoral students at their institutions. The alliance includes UT El Paso, UC Santa Cruz, UC Riverside, and the University of Illinois at Chicago. 

UKRAINIAN PRESIDENT ZELENSKY ADDRESSES UK UNIVERSITY STUDENTS

During tonight’s live broadcast, President Zelensky will address students at Cambridge, Oxford, LSE, UCL, Glasgow, and a number of other UK universities. Zelensky is expected to address the importance of international cooperation, as well as answer student questions. The event is being held by a newly formed group of Ukrainian students at UK universities (USU).

BEST ARTICLES OF THE WEEK

We’ve covered on the blog both the New York Times opinion piece “My College Students Are Not OK,” as well as the backlash from many readers about the burnout that college students are experiencing in the wake of the pandemic. Now, the column’s author, a first-year writing professor at SMU, has published a series of responses to questions about how this burnout fits into larger issues about the cost and value of attending college. If you’ve been following this story, the piece is definitely worth a read!

During pride month, we also wanted to share this article about the mental health challenges that face LGBTQ+ college students. Many, many students struggle with the transition to college, but it can be helpful for LGBTQ+ students and their parents to be aware of the particular challenges that may arise, and the resources on their campus that are available to help with this transition. 

In a follow-up to the article we shared last week with unexpected public colleges that lead to six-figure salaries, check out this list of ten jobs with the best future outlook for college graduates. Some of these jobs are certainly surprising - with elementary school teacher topping the list!

OFFICE HAPPENINGS

With the start of summer, things are really ramping up for our juniors! We know that they are going to put in a lot of hard work over the next several months, but it will be so worth it when they are done with our Finish by September Timeline and can spend senior year focused on their classes and other commitments, not applications. For our past clients, this is often one of their favorite things about working with us!

And last but not least, I was out of the office yesterday celebrating my son’s preschool graduation! A bunch of our current families were working with me while I was pregnant with him (with their older children, of course) so I get questions from time to time about how old “the baby” is now. Hard to believe he will be off to kindergarten and turning six in the fall!

Weekly Update: April 1

BIGGEST COLLEGE-RELATED NEWS OF THE WEEK

BRUTAL REGULAR DECISION NUMBERS

A number of highly selective (or as many of our colleagues are calling them, “highly rejective”) schools released the last of the regular decision admission decisions last night. It was absolutely insane. Check out the latest results from College Kickstart, but don’t forget to keep in mind that these statistics are somewhat misleading as they represent the combination of results from multiple admission plans. In other words, many of these schools are admitting 50%+ of their classes through binding early decision plans with a higher acceptance rate.

Let’s look at Vanderbilt - they had approximately 2,700 ED I applicants; 2,400 ED II applicants; and 41,600 RD applicants for a total of 46,717. As College Kickstart reports, 2,864 students were admitted to the freshman class for an overall acceptance rate of 6%. Totally insane, right? But it gets worse. Of the 2,700 ED I applicants, 24.1% of students were accepted. Of the 2,400 ED II applicants, 10.3% of students were accepted. And for the approximately 41,600 RD applicants? Approximately 1,964 acceptance letters went out. This means that despite the published acceptance rate of 6%, the RD acceptance rate was actually 4.7%. For Vanderbilt - an amazing school, of course, but it’s not Harvard or Yale.

Perhaps even more depressing, Northeastern had an overall acceptance rate of 7% (Northeastern!!!!), Tulane 10%, Boston University 14%, NYU 12%… what is wrong with the world?!

MIT REINSTATES TESTING REQUIREMENT

MIT is the latest school to announce that it will be reinstating its testing requirement for the next admissions cycle. Yet rather than the decision itself, it is the reasoning behind the decision that has been making a lot of waves in the educational consulting community this week. MIT argues that reinstating a testing requirement will allow the admissions process to be more equitable, by giving students who may not have access to advanced coursework or extracurricular programs to demonstrate their readiness for MIT. This is a controversial decision because conventional wisdom has long held that standardized tests perpetuate inequality in the admissions process, as students with access to paid test prep opportunities and advanced curricula typically score better on these exams.

I tend to agree with MIT on this one - after all, you can’t fake a test score (well, as long as you aren’t Rick Singer’s client!!). Even with pricey tutoring, the student has to actually earn the score. On the other hand, when a school is test-optional, the “softer” sides of the admissions process (essays, interview prep, extracurricular depth, recommendation letters, ED strategy) become much more important. Because those are a whole lot easier to manipulate with expert guidance than a test score, students with means can end up with a big advantage in test-optional situations. We will have to see if other schools follow MIT’s lead in bringing back testing requirements for the next admissions cycle. 

ANOTHER NEW SET OF RANKINGS

We’ve written before on the blog about the rankings from Academic Influence, and the latest metric that the organization is using to rank colleges is something called Academic Stewardship. Basically, this number calculates how an institution uses its resources - a ratio of how much impact it has to available resources. The result is an interesting list of schools that often do not appear on any well-known rankings: the #1 school for Academic Stewardship is Fisk College, a private HBCU in Nashville. 

NBA PROSPECTS BYPASS COLLEGE DESPITE NIL DEALS

A growing number of high school basketball players are choosing to bypass college and the NCAA altogether in pursuit of an NBA career, despite the fact that NCAA athletes can now earn money through the NCAA’s newly approved “name, image, and likeness” deals. These allow players to profit from advertisements, video games, and more, even as they remain amateur players. For many students, these incentives are just too new and untested to justify entering college when they could make salaries as full-time players straight from high school. We will have to see how lucrative these NIL deals become to know whether they will attract top-level players to the NCAA - although we also believe that a college education should be worth something in the calculus, too!

TEENS FACED EMOTIONAL ABUSE DURING PANDEMIC

In a sobering study this week, the CDC announced that the majority of teenagers endured emotional abuse while at home during the COVID-19 pandemic. Additional stressors from home and family life were just one of the potential traumatic triggers for teenagers in the last two years, and potentially a symptom of overstressed caregivers, including parents.

As we talk with students about their summer plans, the idea of doing independent research comes up more and more. This can be a really great way for students to pursue their passions (especially those with a unique interest), gain hands-on experience, and create a final product that looks great on college applications. For more about why it is important to pursue research as a high school student, as well as some ways to get started, we recommend diving into this short article and then checking out our Summer Opportunities Database!

We maintain that the number one way to get a true sense of a school is to take an in-person tour. But the truth is, sometimes even that is not enough! During the pandemic, in-person tours were not an option for many students. Other tours were available, but students couldn’t see inside academic buildings or dorms. Or maybe the tour is great, but you visit campus during a break and don’t get to see any students walking around - it can feel like a ghost town! This article explores some ways to improve campus tours, both in-person and virtual, to make the selection process easier for all students, even those who are not able to visit. 

By all accounts, this has been a tough admissions year for many students and families. This article dives into some of the reasons for the change. It is worth a read, though we don’t agree with the tongue-in-cheek tone - this has been a legitimate challenge for many families! If your student did not receive the decision they were hoping for, this article from the L.A. Times provides some strategies parents and family members can use to help students weather their feelings of rejection.  

OFFICE HAPPENINGS

The Congressional Art Competition, a nationwide art contest sponsored by the House of Representatives, is currently accepting applications. If you are a high schooler in Virginia’s 10th Congressional District, you can read more and apply here

And for our Class of 2022 students, if your college essay had anything at all to do with money - work, social class, privilege, etc. - consider submitting to the New York Times annual essay contest. The essays will be published in late June, and writers will be paid for their work. We love any opportunity for students to share their amazing essays!

I know, easier said than done - at this time of year I always think about how absolutely crushed I was when I was rejected from my dream school (you can read the whole saga here). Yet as an adult, I am so incredibly grateful for the path my life took instead. This too shall pass!

BIGGEST COLLEGE-RELATED NEWS OF THE WEEK

HIGH SCHOOL CLASSES COULD LOSE AP STATUS WITH BANNED CONTENT

The College Board has announced that courses that are classified as Advanced Placement will need to teach the entire AP curriculum in order to retain AP designation. In the wake of discussion and litigation around banned topics, this provides a new consideration for schools - they risk losing AP status for classes if AP-specific materials are banned. This may have a particular impact on AP U.S. History classes, which have come under scrutiny before for course content.

IMPACT OF THE WAR IN UKRAINE ON HIGHER EDUCATION

The news has been saturated this week with stories from the invasion of Ukraine, and the ripple effects of the war have begun to be felt by U.S. colleges. Many colleges are pulling students out of study abroad programs in Russia, ending research partnerships, and cutting any financial ties with Russian institutions. At the same time, most colleges are making an effort to protect and support both Russian and Ukrainian students on campus. 

NEW MEXICO MAKES PUBLIC COLLEGE FREE

A new initiative in New Mexico will waive tuition for state and tribal colleges, including community colleges. This follows similar initiatives, at the community college level, from states like California and North Carolina. However, we don’t expect to see state systems with more demand for in-state education (like Virginia) make this change any time soon.

HIGH POINT UNIVERSITY ADDS NEW SCHOOLS AND COLLEGES

With the help of private donors, High Point has raised around $500 million for new initiatives on campus. The university will open a law school, announcing the new dean in May, and also embark on major campus improvement projects including a new library, new student housing, and a brand new parking garage. Since 2005, the number of academic schools at High Point has jumped from three to 14!

BEST ARTICLES OF THE WEEK

A UVA senior published an essay in the New York Times opinion section this week grappling with free speech and censorship on campus. The essay describes how even students that hold “mainstream” views are often self-censoring for fear of social recriminations on campus. It is a nuanced piece that is definitely worth a read, no matter which side of the debate around campus speech you support. 

There has certainly been a shift in recent years toward more entrepreneurial emphasis on college campuses, with new dedicated spaces and coursework meant to empower young entrepreneurs (that High Point fundraise we mentioned earlier? One of the new schools they add will be a School of Entrepreneurship). This opinion piece by the founder of Best Buy supports the movement toward emphasizing creativity, courage, and innovation as essential parts of a valuable college education. 

OFFICE HAPPENINGS

We had such a fun lunch today with this adorable NYU freshman who is killing it at school and home for spring break! She and I had already worked together in person for about a year pre-Covid, but she reminded me today that she had never actually met Staci or Shannon in person before!!

I had completely forgotten that, particularly with Staci because they worked so closely together for so long. Anyway, it was a lot of fun and I hope we get to do it again when she is back over the summer :)

And speaking of the summer… if you’re still looking for summer plans or just hoping for some resume and interview tips, check out this year’s FCPS Teen Job Fairs! The fairs will be held at West Springfield High School on March 12 and at Chantilly High School on March 19.

How to Make the Most of Your Winter Break

It may be hard to believe, but winter break is just around the corner! While we know most students are looking forward to taking some time to rest and relax, you may also be wondering how to maximize this time when it comes to the college process. If that’s you, read on!


Research colleges

We encourage all of our juniors to do the bulk of their college research over winter break. This allows them to get a head start on building their lists, and usually means they’ll have more time to look at schools than if they saved all of their trips for spring break. But even for sophomores and younger students looking to get a jump on the college process, winter break is a great time!

In addition to visiting schools in person (if possible), students can also use the break to complete virtual visits without using valuable homework or extracurricular time. If you are planning to do some visits over the break, jump back to our posts about in-person and virtual visits so you’re prepared and can make the most of your visits. 

And don’t forget - if you’re traveling to see relatives for the holidays, you may as well swing by any school nearby, even if you aren’t able to schedule an official visit or don’t have any interest in that particular school in the first place! The more schools you visit, the more you’ll learn about your preferences… and can come back and share them with us! For example, maybe you thought you wanted an urban environment, but after walking through Emory while visiting Grandma in Atlanta, you realized you’re open to schools on the outskirts of cities after all!

I got to swing by Wash U last weekend while in St. Louis - yay! More on that in the weekly update, but it was super easy to just walk around. At one point we even tagged on to a tour group!

Do an enrichment activity

Many colleges offer summer programs and courses that allow students to take classes over the summer, but there are opportunities to do so in the winter as well. Cornell’s really fantastic pre-college program offers winter courses from January 3-21 - check those out! Students can also use the time to complete asynchronous, free courses through EdX or Coursera - check out our list of courses for some ideas!

This also may be a great time to complete a volunteer project or other independent work that will help you show colleges your skills and give you some experience in a field you may want to study! Take some time to plan and reflect

For younger students in eighth or ninth grade, it may feel premature to complete college visits or work on applications. And ALL students could use some time to reflect and plan for their next steps. Check out our Four-Year Plan Template for some questions to consider every year, to help you plan for the college application process and beyond! 

Search for summer internships

Summer may feel far away, but many opportunities and internships have deadlines as early as late January! Winter break is a great time to plan for these opportunities and fill out applications while you don’t have as much schoolwork on your plate.

Best of the Blog: Post-Submission Emails and Grade Updates

Now that first quarter grades have been released, we are receiving a ton of questions from seniors who want to know if they should be sending those grades to colleges - and if so, how do they do it?

We decided to share our post from last fall on this topic to provide some insight! Keep reading to learn more about whether you should send grades, how to follow up with colleges, and what a sample email would say!


We are so excited to be DONE with submitting all of our early applications! But as our clients know by now, the work does not stop when you click “submit!” Not only is the post-submission portal tracking extremely important, as we have mentioned before, but some students may also want to consider sending follow-up communication to the various admissions representatives to share first quarter grade updates.

Let me start by mentioning that this is not a one-size fits all approach. Some schools specifically indicate that they do not want follow-up emails with grades.

If that’s the case, don’t send them! While schools that track demonstrated interest are generally the ones to whom these emails should be directed, it’s important to note that there’s a fine line between an enthusiastic update and over-the-top bombarding.

We do not recommend sending repeated emails. Down the line in a deferral or waitlist situation, depending on the school - possibly. But definitely not at this point in the admissions cycle. You do not want to annoy anyone, and repeated emails will be annoying - no two ways about it.

With that warning out of the way, we suggest that if you do have new grades to report that reflect positively on your candidacy, you take the initiative to reach out to the admissions office and let your assigned admissions officer know.

A handful of high schools will send out first-quarter grades as a matter of course, but most will not do so unless asked - especially this year, when school counselors are already overburdened. So if you believe your first-quarter grades will improve your application, it is up to you to take on the responsibility of sharing them with the admissions office!

One more note of caution: while I would not recommend proactively sharing poor first-quarter grades (or even ones that are relatively strong, but do show a downwards trend), it’s also important to recognize that it’s not necessarily possible to hide them, either.

I think that many applicants believe that admissions offices are too busy to follow up on particular aspects of a single application - but this is not necessarily the case! For a student who has had a shaky math score in 11th grade, the admissions officer is definitely going to want to see how that student is doing in math at the beginning of 12th grade. 

So, now that you know why to send a post-submission email, here’s how:

  1. If you can, address your email to your regional admissions officer. At many schools, you can find this information on the website with just a bit of research. Your email is more likely to be read by the right person if you address it directly. You can also ask your school counselor if you’re not sure.

  2. Identify yourself by name and indicate that you have applied to the school already.

  3. Show that you have done your homework. This is a place to address any questions that you have that were not answered by the school’s website. You can also ask if the representative is planning a virtual visit to your school this semester, or reference a previous visit if you have met them before. 

  4. Report your grades. Tell the admissions officer that you want to update your application with your first-quarter grades, and provide them in a clear way that is easy to read. 

  5. Close your email by thanking the admissions officer for their time and reiterating your interest in attending their school. If this is your top-choice school, make sure to let them know!

Remember: keep it concise and simple. Here is a sample:

LGBTQ-Friendly Campuses!

We are proud to both employ and serve members of the LGBTQ+ community, and wanted to take this opportunity during Pride Month to spotlight a few of the most unexpectedly LGBTQ-friendly college campuses in the country. While there are a number of schools that are widely known to come in strong in this category, such as Bryn Mawr, Wesleyan, Vassar, and Brown, we wanted to share a few others whose amazing LGBTQ+ offerings and resources are not quite as well-known to the general public.

Lehigh University

Lehigh’s Pride Center for Sexual Orientation & Gender Diversity is dedicated to supporting LGBTQ+ students on campus. Some of the Center’s signature programs include a mentorship program to match first-year students with upperclassmen, graduate students, faculty, or staff to serve as mentors. The Pride Center also maintains a public Out List of LGBTQ+ faculty and staff to allow for networking and mentorship opportunities. Trans students who are considering LU can find all of the support the school offers through Trans@LU

In addition to LGBTQ issues, the Pride Center focuses on intersectional justice, with themes that in past years have included racial justice, disability justice, and prison abolition. For students who do not identify as LGBTQ+, the Center also offers LU Allyship training to help all students become better allies to the community on campus!

Indiana University

Indiana’s LGBTQ+ Culture Center also offers mentorship opportunities for incoming first-year students, in addition to LGBTQ-specific scholarships. The Center also offers free counseling for students, free HIV testing, and free safer sex supplies, as well as resources and guidance for students who are transitioning at IU and allyship training for all students. IU also has many student groups available for LGBTQ+ students: the Ace/Aro Group, Black & Bold, for Black LGBTQ+ students, Connections, for LBGTQ+ women and non-binary people, Men Like Us, for GBQ+ men, and the Transgender Union for Students. 

Housing at IU allows trans students to live in spaces that align with their gender identity, as well as gender-inclusive restrooms. There is also a dedicated LGBTQ+ living-learning community, called Spectrum. 

Macalester College

The Gender & Sexuality Commons at Mac offers many different events for students to celebrate and build community, including the Lavender Reception and Lavender Graduation, GSRC weekly Tea Time, and Pride Month celebrations. The center also keeps an Out & Proud list of faculty and staff, offers allyship training, and provides dedicated resources for trans students. 

Mac also provides all-gender housing for students beginning in fall 2023.

CU Boulder

CU Boulder’s Pride Office provides weekly check-ins (virtual during COVID-19) for students to attend when seeking support or community. Boulder also offers gender-neutral housing in addition to a dedicated Spectrum living-learning community with gender-neutral bathroom facilities. 

Medical Services at CU Boulder provide a variety of healthcare services for LGBTQ+ students, including identity-affirming care, identify-affirming hormone therapy, the use of preferred names and pronouns, PrEP for HIV prevention, insurance and billing support, and identity-affirming surgical options. 

University of Washington

The Q Center at the University of Washington has worked hard to offer virtual services to students during COVID-19, including a Discord group, an online Gender Discussion Group, and a QTBIPOC Discussion Group, as well as drop-in hours and a mentorship program. The Center also offers educational services, like allyship training and Queer 101, as well as events like Lavender Graduation. 

The Center also allows students to rent space and spend time building community!

Earth Day Blog: Greenest Schools in the US

Happy Earth Day! In honor of the day, we have compiled a list of some of the greenest colleges in the country, as well as some unexpected environmentally-friendly majors to consider (beyond environmental science)! 


Oberlin College

With the top spot on the Princeton Review’s list of the Greenest Colleges, Oberlin is a great choice for an environmentally-conscious student. In 2000, the Center for Environmental Studies was opened on campus, a “green building” with solar panels on the roof and waste water recycling. On campus as well as in the town of Oberlin, they monitor electricity and water use in real time, and recently installed 10 acres of solar panels. Their goal is to achieve carbon neutrality by the year 2025. 

Students can engage in the process by volunteering at the George Jones Memorial Farm, which grows a third of the produce consumed on campus. Sustainable food practices are important to Oberlin students - 25% of them are part of the Oberlin Student Cooperative Association, a student-run dining system that buys the majority of its food from local vendors. Students also run a Bicycle Co-op and other volunteer groups on campus.

The environmental studies program is one of the top in the country, as you may expect, but Oberlin is also a world-class conservatory with phenomenal opportunities for the budding musicians out there!

Middlebury College

Currently in the midst of an “Earth Week” lecture series for students and faculty, Middlebury College in Vermont is another school that keeps environmental sustainability front and center. Middlebury’s campus became carbon neutral in 2016, the final result of a student initiative that began in 2007. It is the first school of its size to achieve carbon neutrality. The school is currently in the process of working toward additional goals with its 10-year Energy2028 initiative. The initiative includes a transition to 100% renewable energy by 2028, as well as divesting fully from fossil fuels.

The environmental studies program at Middlebury offers 14 different concentrations, ranging from conservation biology to literature. Wow! And if you’re interested in combining your interests in environmental studies with a passion for cultures and languages, Middlebury has you covered. Their reputation as an international studies/foreign language powerhouse comes through in offerings that include the summer Middlebury School of the Environment program in China and an accelerated master’s degree in International Environmental Policy.

Pitzer College

Pitzer, one of the Claremont Colleges near Los Angeles, lists Environmental Sustainability as one of its five core values. The school “walks the walk” with drought-resistant native plants and LEED-certified sustainable buildings populating the campus. 68% of the residence halls on Pitzer’s campus are LEED-certified. More than 25% of the energy on campus comes from renewable sources. 

Environmental analysis is one of the most popular majors for Pitzer students. Pitzer was also the first school in Southern California to divest from fossil fuels, and is home to the Robert Redford Conservancy for Southern California Sustainability. 

If you’re interested in taking a more active approach by starting your own project or research in the field, Pitzer might be a particularly good fit. As we mentioned back in November on our election day blog post on Schools for Politically-Minded Students, Pitzer’s Community Engagement Center offers funding to support individual projects!

Dickinson College

Students at Dickinson are currently in the midst of a sustainability-focused EcoChallenge for the month of April. During the challenge, students will form teams and work to lower their carbon footprint. Dickinson itself reached carbon neutrality last year in 2020, and uses real-time energy monitoring in over 20 campus buildings. 

Dickinson also has its own organic farm, which grows much of the produce eaten on campus. In fact, the dining hall has been named a Certified Green Restaurant by the Green Restaurant Association, making it one of 50 colleges in the US to achieve this status. The campus is also home to two honeybee hives, and students can volunteer to become part of The Hive Cooperative!

Lewis & Clark College

Students describe Lewis & Clark as collaborative, outdoorsy, open-minded, and inclusive. The campus sits on 137 wooded acres one block from a national park, giving students the opportunity to have a bucolic college experience only a few miles from Portland, OR. 

Lewis & Clark is nationally recognized for its environmental studies programs on both the undergraduate and the graduate level. The School of Law is ranked first in the country for its environmental law program, and undergraduate students can take advantage through an accelerated BA and Masters of Studies in Law (MSL) in Environmental, Natural Resources, and Energy Law that students can complete in four years. 

Colby College

Colby recently introduced a new concentration in ecocriticism, allowing humanities students to add their voices to the conversation around the environment. Years ago, Colby was also one of the first colleges in the country to reach carbon neutrality, becoming carbon neutral in 2013. 24% of the buildings on Colby’s campus are LEED-certified. The campus’ Buck Environment and Climate Change Lab connects and provides funding for students and faculty engaged in research on climate change. 

Students who want to get involved in sustainability on campus can choose from many different organizations, including EcoReps, the Environmental Coalition, the Colby Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association, and the Colby Alliance for Renewable Energy. And the latest student initiative on campus is the reusable mug program, which would require Dining Services to provide a reusable mug to each student in an effort to curb the use of paper and plastic cups to take beverages on the go.

Some of these may surprise you - majoring in fashion design, urban planning, or entrepreneurship can definitely be an amazing eco-friendly choice!

Election Day Blog: Schools for Politically-Minded Students

Living in the DC area, we don’t have to look far to find colleges that offer exciting opportunities for politically-minded students. We all know that American, GW, and Georgetown offer great programs for the future politicians among us - and you can’t beat the exposure to the DC political scene (in both good and bad ways!).

Today, though, we want to spotlight a few others that may have fallen under your radar!


Hillsdale College

Hillsdale hosted Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos just last week, and has also had visits from prominent speakers like Attorney General Barr. Hillsdale is a nonsectarian Christian institution, and according to its mission statement, “considers itself a trustee of our Western philosophical and theological inheritance tracing to Athens and Jerusalem, a heritage finding its clearest expression in the American experiment of self-government under law.” One of the only colleges in the country that does not accept any form of state or federal aid, Hillsdale is very appealing for ultra-conservative students with an interest in politics. The interdisciplinary Political Economy major combines economics, politics, and history, and students of all majors report positive experiences participating in WHIP, the Washington-Hillsdale Internship Program based at the school’s D.C. campus.

Claremont Colleges

The Claremont Colleges include Claremont McKenna, Pitzer, Pomona, Scripps, and Harvey Mudd. The Consortium offers several unique programs for students interested in politics through a more philosophical lens, including majors in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE), and well as Philosophy and Public Affairs (PPA). The PPE major uses the Oxford tutorial style to provide students with the opportunity to learn in small group discussions and seminars. Students can apply for this highly selective major in their sophomore year.  For students interested in current political issues, the interdisciplinary Environment, Economics, and Politics major prepares them for a career in many environmental fields. While activism is popular at all of the Claremont Colleges, Pitzer stands out in particular, with core values including Social Responsibility and Student Engagement. Graduation requirements at Pitzer even include coursework in Social Justice Theory and Social Responsibility! All Consortium students can take advantage of the many resources at Pitzer’s Community Engagement Center, including funding to support individual projects.

Syracuse University

Syracuse made international headlines several years ago after student protests led the university to remove fossil fuel stocks from its endowment several years back, and the administration has continued to demonstrated its commitment to student activism by establishing a dedicated Student Activism Engagement Team. More recently, the university sponsored dozens of informational sessions and conversations about voting for students in the lead-up to the election. Academically, they also offer a Citizenship and Civic Engagement (CCE) program, in which students combine the CCE major with a second, related major of their choice and finish their senior year by creating a workable Action Plan around a social issue. Environmentally-minded students may choose to combine CCE with a major in Environment, Sustainability, and Policy. Both majors are housed in Syracuse’s Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs. Maxwell is also home to nine different research centers, where interested undergraduates can complete research on a variety of political topics. However, students from a variety of different majors can take advantage of the DC campus and all of its offerings!

Texas Christian University

TCU’s Political Science department offers a variety of opportunities for students to learn outside of the classroom, including an internship program in Washington, D.C. and the ability to participate in Model United Nations and Moot Court. Whether students pursue the BA Program in Comparative Race and Ethnic Studies or the signature TCU Justice Journey program that actually takes students on a bus tour to sites that were significant in the civil rights movement, there is no question that the Interdisciplinary Department of Comparative Race and Ethnic Studies provides opportunities that cannot be found at other schools. TCU is also home to a number of politically active student groups, including chapters of the College Republicans and College Democrats. The Community Engagement Programming division works hard to keeps students active, and has even pivoted to sharing virtual engagement opportunities during Covid!

Washington University St. Louis

Wash U in St. Louis has always been known for its politically active campus community. The university has hosted four presidential debates (and one VP debate!) through which students were able to volunteer and gain real-world experience behind the scenes of a presidential election. The school also offers a unique “religion and politics” minor that offers the chance to delve deeper into niche issues. Another appealing option can be found in the distinctive, in-depth civil engagement leadership training program for juniors and seniors called the Civic Scholars Program. Lastly, future artists might enjoy the Civic and Community Arts Residency initiative, which offers the option for undergrads to blend an interest in civic engagement with a passion for arts. 

Hampden-Sydney College

Located right here in Virginia, Hampden-Sydney is the country’s oldest traditional all-male college and one of the most conservative schools in the country. The Government and Foreign Affairs department at Hampden-Sydney offers two distinctive minors through the Wilson Center for Leadership: National Security Studies and Leadership in the Public Interest. Hampden-Sydney is also home to the Center for the Study of Political Economy, a co-curricular center that sponsors lecture series and reading groups. The Center’s mission is “to motivate undergraduate students to create a more just and prosperous world through entrepreneurship and scholarship in classical liberal political economy.”

Columbia University

Columbia has always had a well-known reputation for political activism on campus, including the Butler Banner Project in recent years. While the majority of students are liberal, the school also has a large conservative population and a diversity of political thought on campus. Students can publish political commentary in two journals, The Columbia Political Review and The Current. The World Leaders Forum allows students to hear from political leaders all over the world, and undergrads can join a wide variety of political organizations on campus. The dedicated Task Force on Inclusion and Belonging proactively identifies issues and solutions, including the Campus Conversations intiative that encourages students to engage in dialogue. Columbia has graduated three Presidents, eight Attorneys General, and ten Supreme Court Justices, as well as numerous other political actors in recent years, and hosts many notable speakers in its political speaker series.

Post-Submission Emails and Grade Updates

We are so excited to be nearly DONE with submitting all of our early applications! But as our clients know by now, the work does not stop when you click “submit!” Not only is the post-submission portal tracking extremely important, as we have mentioned before, but some students may also want to consider sending follow-up communication to the various admissions representatives to share first quarter grade updates.

Let me start by mentioning that this is not a one-size fits all approach. Some schools specifically indicate that they do not want follow-up emails with grades. If that’s the case, don’t send them! While schools that track demonstrated interest are generally the ones to whom these emails should be directed, it’s important to note that there’s a fine line between an enthusiastic update and over-the-top bombarding.

We do not recommend sending repeated emails. Down the line in a deferral or waitlist situation, depending on the school - possibly. But definitely not at this point in the admissions cycle. You do not want to annoy anyone, and repeated emails will be annoying - no two ways about it.

With that warning out of the way, we suggest that if you do have new grades to report that reflect positively on your candidacy, you take the initiative to reach out to the admissions office and let your assigned admissions officer know. A handful of high schools will send out first-quarter grades as a matter of course, but most will not do so unless asked - especially this year, when school counselors are already overburdened. So if you believe your first-quarter grades will improve your application, it is up to you to take on the responsibility of sharing them with the admissions office!

One more note of caution: while I would not recommend proactively sharing poor first-quarter grades, it’s also important to recognize that it’s not necessarily possible to hide them, either. I think that many applicants believe that admissions offices are too busy to follow up on particular aspects of a single application - but this is not necessarily the case! For a student who has had a shaky math score in 11th grade, the admissions officer is definitely going to want to see how that student is doing in math at the beginning of 12th grade. 

So, now that you know why to send a post-submission email, here’s how:

  1. If you can, address your email to your regional admissions officer. At many schools, you can find this information on the website with just a bit of research. Your email is more likely to be read by the right person if you address it directly. You can also ask your school counselor if you’re not sure.

  2. Identify yourself by name and indicate that you have applied to the school already.

  3. Show that you have done your homework. This is a place to address any questions that you have that were not answered by the school’s website. You can also ask if the representative is planning a virtual visit to your school this semester, or reference a previous visit if you have met them before. 

  4. Report your grades. Tell the admissions officer that you want to update your application with your first-quarter grades, and provide them in a clear way that is easy to read. 

  5. Close your email by thanking the admissions officer for their time and reiterating your interest in attending their school. If this is your top-choice school, make sure to let them know!

Remember: keep it concise and simple. Here is a sample:

Practical Tips for Researching Colleges

College List Research Northern Virginia

As we’ve begun the process of finalizing college lists with this year’s junior class, we realized that lists of school recommendations aren’t all that helpful if students aren’t able to narrow that broader list down to one that is manageable. This is especially the case when trying to prioritize which schools to visit.

Below I have outlined our recommendations to help students work toward finding their home away from home for the next four years, once they already have a starting point of schools from which to choose.

 

1. Spend time exploring each school's website. I would specifically recommend looking for information on the following:

(a) General Education Requirements - How strict/liberal are they? How do they align with your preferences?

(b) Career Center - What do they offer? What statistics do they share? Be wary of any school that brags about a 100% acceptance rate to certain graduate programs - this usually means that they restrict where you can apply to manipulate their statistics and is not a good sign, in my opinion, for a number of reasons. What about internship opportunities?

(c) Residential Life - What is the dorm situation like? What kinds of activities are offered on weekends? 

(d) School Mission - A lot of people don't pay attention to mission statements and I think this is critical! This will give you a lot of information about a school's priorities. 

(e) Alumni Relations - Which cities are represented most with alumni gatherings? How often are events planned? This will give you an idea of the strength of the alumni network.

(f) Major Information - What is offered? What are the major requirements and options? What extracurriculars are available in conjunction with that major?

(g) School Newspaper - My secret weapon! You'll learn about everything, good and bad. 

EXTRA TIP: Write lots of notes during this part of your research. These will come in handy during the supplemental essay process.

2. Take a virtual tour, either on the school's website or at youvisit.com.

3. Create an account at Princeton Review's website (review.com) and read their write-ups. I particularly like the "students say" perspective vs. the "school says" perspective.

4. Read reviews at unigo.com (I like the "most answered questions" part).

5. Check out the "report cards" at niche.com.

6. If you want to buy a book to read profiles, I like the Fiske Guide the best, personally, but I also don't really think this is necessary because you will find so much online! Some people like to read a book, though, and that is fine too!

Once you’ve checked off these steps, you should end up with a clear grasp of which schools deserve a planned visit and which do not. Don’t forget that I ultimately recommend a final college list of about ten schools: one dream reach, three “regular reaches,” three middle schools, and three safety schools.
